Shepard Fairey’s Studio Number One has done the artwork for the Saks Fifth Avenue Spring 2009 WANT IT! marketing campaign. It’s very much in the Fairey propaganda style – an interesting approach from a luxury retailer like Saks. Done this way, the campaign doesn’t look very luxe. The graphics are bold, no shame, in your face, must-have trends trends trends! – a humorous twist on the obsessive preaching of the ever-changing seasonal trends. It’s almost as though Saks is making fun of themselves – “You must “arm yourself with a slouchy bag!” and wear “brave new pants!” and don’t forget to “believe believe in brighter lips!” – except, its not that funny and more trying too hard to be cool. Graphically though, it is very interesting.
On second thought, the fact that I’m writing this about a retail catalog makes me think Saks knew exactly what they were doing. It’s not every day a catalog makes me stop and actually read through every page. But whether it makes me want to buy? Not really.
