This is a truly ingenious project from d’Hanis & Lachaert for Droog at Milan Design Week 2009.
The Anamorphis series was inspired by a 16th century artform where a cylindrical mirror was placed on a drawing to transform the image into 3D.
D’Hanis & Lacheart used polished silver containers to act as mirrors to, when placed on their accompanying porcelain plates, reveal beautifully delicate images on an otherwise unrecognizable, distorted image. The container shapes were chosen to represent everyday objects, but their silver finish reflects an attention to detail that is also noted in the intricacy of the images.
The designer’s describe their inspiration as: we made a silver bottle and cups that can be used for liquids and at the same time as a cylindrical mirror ( polished silver has the ultimate quality to be an excellent mirror as used by the ancient Greeks and Romans). When the bottle is placed next to an unrecognizably distorted image it reveals the image of very precious, protected birds. The reflection of these endangered birds on the bottle’s precious surface reflects our deep concern about the threatening extinction of species.
We love the idea that the beauty of an object, of an idea, of life is not always apparent at first, but it might just be all in how you look at it.
