It’s official – color has invaded this city of black like an 80s flashback. For the past 2 seasons, the runways were saturated with pops of vibrant, lively colors. Designers were all about expressing optimism and hope as the recession set into reality. But as in all cases, color favoritism is bound to happen. Yellow seems to be the current golden child with bright greens, purples, blues and pinks next in line. Even Pantone’s 2009 Color of the Year is a warm, engaging yellow – Pantone 14-0848 Mimosa. To which I pose… when the stock market goes down, do colors get brighter?

The 2009 spring/summer palette:
Fresh, optimistic, friendly and approachable. These colors are exactly what we need in times of downturn. A small indulgence but quite therapeutic – color helps affect mood. Warm yellows are generally energizing and blues, calming. But beware wearing too many colors at once to avoid looking like a bag of skittles. Unless, of course, you do want to look like one. Thats cool too.
