Fashion’s Night Out Gets New Yorkers Back in Stores…But Did It Seal the Deal?

The PSA for Fashion’s Night Out urging New Yorkers to pull out the plastic in the name of saving NYC’s 2nd largest industry sector is far from subtle. “The entire fashion industry is counting on you,” caution Anna, Vera and Diane. But did everyone heed their battle cry and shop ’til they dropped last night? Well, we haven’t seen any sales figures yet, but from what we observed, we can’t imagine that the numbers will be mind blowing. We were ooh-ing and ah-ing over bags and shoes all night long, but we were so distracted by the sheer spectacle of it all that we forgot to actually buy anything. Plus, who wants to carry bags around all night long when you’re hopping from party to party, teetering in 4-inch heels? Diane von Furstenberg concurred, explaining, “There’s so much partying I don’t know how much business we’ll do. But it’s about building excitement… and celebrating.”

While the impact of FNO may not be immediate, we bet that the ROI will be felt in the long run. Why, you ask? You could feel it in the air — the collective sigh of relief on the part of fashionistas everywhere that, not only is it okay to step foot in our favorite shopping Meccas, but it is also okay to resume our love affair with  beautiful things… even if they’re not 75% off. This attitudinal shift is what will get us back in stores for good.
