Minx’d Reviews For Minx Nails

When I saw the glamorous, reflective MINX nails on my trendy co-worker I knew I had to have them – I immediately hit the web to learn more.  What are these? How is this possible? Where can I get this done??? Well, let’s just say I found out Minx is HOT.

The unmistakable colors and patterns aren’t painted on from a bottle or made from powder and glue, Minx nails are actually polymer strips, which means no chipping, smudging or drying time!!  And, Minx is a green product, so there are no fumes and no need for chemicals to apply or remove the strips.  All the biggest diva celebrities are wearing them…Beyonce, Rihanna, Lady GAGA… like I said, a must have. So I found my best girlfriend, treated her to a belated birthday present and booked an appointment for two at Bliss Spa, one of the few places that offer Minx manicures in NYC.

I excitedly picked a shiny metallic gold color, then sat down and we began. First the technician chose the size that best fit my nail, then she took the “sticker” and put it under a special heat lamp to activate the glue.  She applied the sticker, pressed down on top of my nail, then filed down the excess.

As she began to file each strip down, I started to get nervous.  I noticed the edges of my nails were not looking perfect and crisp like the pictures I had seed. The technician said imperfections are harder to hide on the solid colors than the patterned ones, but that didn’t stop me from leaving the salon a little disappointed.  Although I loved how they looked from a distance, when I looked up close (which of course I was doing every 5 seconds), they looked messy…and when you have gold, metallic nails, messy is not going to work.

The next day, I looked down sadly at my fraying fingertips, got out my nail clippers and began trimming.  To be honest, they looked better when I was done, but should I really have had to cut my nails on my own for my $55 pro-manicure to look good? The answer is no.

When I got to work on Monday, I asked my coworker if it had happened to her too.  She told me that her technician (also from Bliss) had instructed her to use a hairdryer to re-activate the stickiness of the glue in the event the nails began to peel off.  Although I was excited for this glimmer of hope, I was thinking, “I just got this manicure 2 days ago…do I have to start ‘fixing’ already?”  Minx is supposed to last up to 2 weeks!

After I got over my “Minx-hater” episode, I started using the hair dryer and my nails actually began to look better…the edges smoothed out.  I got compliment after compliment and people wherever I went were stopping and asking, “Where did you get them?”  All of a sudden, my attitude changed and I was all, “Yes, these are Minx, Beyonce has them blah blah blah…”

I took my Minx off about a week and a half after I got them done.  I probably could have kept them on longer, but they had begun to look a little “beat up” and the edges were increasingly more jagged. In the end, although it wasn’t an entirely positive experience (and it could have just been my technician…), I would get them again.  They were definitely fun, special and a great topic of conversation. Pedicure for sure next time…and I am totally getting the gold metallic leopard print!!!
