Spirits bottle are getting pretty fancy these days but at the top of my list is the cool glass skull by Crystal Head Vodka. Back in October last year, there was buzz about an online video of Aykroyd talking about the Skull. People weren’t sure if it was a joke or some promotion for Indiana Jones. But yes, its real and its the bottle that steals the show. The bottle is inspired by the myth of the 13 crystal skulls that were sequestered in various parts of the world under mysterious circumstances thousands of years ago. They are believed to offer spiritual power to those who hold or possess them. Seven have allegedly been found. The bottle is intended as a replica of those skulls.
Originally, American portrait and sculpture artist John Alexander approached actor Dan Aykroyd with an idea for a tequila in a skull. Aykroyd liked the skull idea but wanted to make a pure vodka with no additives to go inside instead. Together they went to Bruni Glass, S.p.A., in Italy – the one glass blower in the world who made the skull perfectly with no blemishes or bubbles. The vodka is made by Diamond Estates Wines & Spirits Ltd. out of Newfoundland and the vodka is triple filtered through polished crystals known as herkimer diamonds.
With an interesting story, a unique design and collector value, I had to get myself one. The vodka’s been long gone but the skull remains displayed on my shelf. And every time someone comes over, its the first thing they ask about. There’s no better advertising than that.
